Winter Worries

June 2nd, 2009

Winter is a beautiful time of year for many. Crackling open fires, steaming cups of chocolate, snow flakes at the window, what could be more perfect.

If only it were true for everyone:

For those suffering from inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis the winter months often have a different meaning. Dry cracking skin, intensive itching and a continuous battle to control the discomfort.

Yes, winter is the season where eczema and psoriasis flare-ups are most common and the conditions are often at their worst.

Cold winter weather and dry indoor heat can cause symptoms to flare or worsen, the American Academy of Dermatology reports. People also wear extra layers of clothing often preventing adequate airflow around the skin resulting in sweating and increased skin irritations.

American dermatologist Dr James Korkos said “ One of the best things a person can do in winter is to moisturize more and avoid things that will dry out your skin.”

Here are some tips that may help to lessen the discomforts of winter:

  • Ensure rooms are well ventilated without drafts
  • Add extra layers of cotton clothing and avoid woolens and synthetics – which irritate sensitive skin and do not breathe, resulting in perspiration
  • Keep cotton against your skin
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Place a bowl of water in heated rooms to prevent the humidity levels dropping
  • Cover more of your skin in an attempt to keep you warm.
  • Wear protective cotton gloves under warm woolen ones
  • Avoid synthetic socks
  • Don’t stay in wet clothing – especially wet shoes and socks
  • Moisturize regularly
  • Controlling flare-ups of your eczema and psoriasis during winter will enable you to enjoy the beauty of winter along with your friends.
